For the November 2015 competition, we welcomed Richard Houghton to judge our new Best Portrait Cup print competition.
Richard provided constructive comment on each of the submissions, which we all found extremely enlightening. He emphasised four critical factors for a successful portrait: lighting, pose, composition and background. Having talked the group through his reasons for selecting images, Richard narrowed the field down to a shortlist of six, then four.
The winner of the cup was Sue West with her superbly lit shot ‘Burghley Boy’. Second place was another monochrome portrait, ‘Poise’ by David Townshend, with Dave Baxter and Wally Lodge coming third and fourth with their colourful shots of actors from studio sessions.
Members greatly valued the contribution by Richard Houghton, and we now expect that next year’s entries for the Cup will be of even higher quality!
